During the early 20th century, Bachata Dance began to take shape in the Dominican Republic, a Caribbean country, and it combines elements for Latin, Caribbean, African, and western music styles.
This art form gained popularity in the rural neighborhoods of the island, but was virtually eliminated during the Trujillo dictatorship of 1930-1961 due to its perceived as a “backward, lower art form for country folk” which, according to the dictator, was a “backward, lower art form”. There came a time over the course of Trujillo’s reign when Bachata dance flourished again and soon spread from Latin America and the Mediterranean to other parts of the world.
There is no doubt that Bachata is an equivalent of Blues in the U.S. since it is a very sensual dance,
which is often centered on the subjects of heartbreak, romance, and loss as well as expressing romantic feelings towards a particular person. Essentially, the dance consists of three steps with the hip moving in a Cuban manner, followed by a tap with a hip movement on the fourth beat of each measure. A part of the soul of dance is the movement of the hips, and it’s very important to keep this in mind when dancing.
In general, the majority of the dancer’s movements are made in the lower body, up to the hips, and the upper body only moves very rarely. Currently, there are several different types of Bachata dances that are popular in countries throughout the world, but each of them is distinct from the others.
